An MOS is a Military Occupational Specialty. This is your job. What job you end up with will depend upon what kind of contract you apply for. The PLC and OCC programs offer four different types of contracts in each program.
GROUND: This program represents the lion's share of Marine Officers. This encompasses the other twenty or so MOSs available to Marine Officers. This program is probably the hardest to get selected for because so many compete for these slots. For a detailed description on how these are chosen, what is available, and what you would be doing on your first and second tours as a particular ground officer, click on this link to the MOS Handbook.
AVIATION: We guarantee this up front. When you apply for this MOS, your application will only be evaluated against others applying for this same program and in the same year group as you. If you are accepted into this program, you complete OCS and accept your commission, you are guaranteed to go to Flight School as a Student Naval Aviator. You are not guaranteed to get your wings. These are earned at Flight School. However, the failure rate for Marine Aviators is half that of other services due in large part to our higher standards and more rigorous training at OCS and The Basic School. For more information on this go to my aviation page.
NAVAL FLIGHT OFFICER: We also guarantee this up front. Just as above, when you apply for this MOS, your application will only be evaluated against others applying for this same program and in the same year group as you. If you are accepted into this program, you complete OCS and accept your commission, you are guaranteed to go to Flight School as a Student Naval Flight Officer. This program is normally just as competitive at the board as aviation, but it is even more difficult to qualify for. Only about 1/3 of those who take the air test qualify for NFO. STAFF JUDGE ADVOCATE: This is our legal program guaranteeing someone the opportunity to practice law as a Marine Staff Judge advocate. For more information go to the official SJA site at http://sja.hqmc.usmc.mil/.
